IBM dives into converged hardware with PureSystems by Barb Darrow

Whatever you do, don’t compare IBM’s new PureSystems to Oracle’s Exadata or Cisco’s Unified Compute System. PureSystems will be the latest converged data center hardware — systems which pack compute, storage and networking into one enclosure — to hit the market.

The data center is undergoing a significant transformation. In the past 15 or so years, data center discussions have been extremely hardware-centric, but as the power of cloud computing comes to pass there is a shift towards infrastructure software. The next-generation data center will be defined by the software that coordinates all of the hardware to achieve a greater level of efficiency.

Big data and cloud computing: Watch out for these unknowns by David Linthicum

Big data and cloud computing hold great promise, but keep an eye on the key questions around this pairing.

What Is a Hybrid Cloud? by Stephen Spector

In my recent Direct2Dell blog post, I discussed the current trend of enterprises running private clouds starting to engage in the public cloud concept via a hybrid cloud. As part of my recent blog posts on the basics of clouds, I would like to introduce the concept of a hybrid cloud in more detail, as this new cloud feature is becoming a significant trend in 2012.

The Importance of Open Source to Open Clouds by Red Hat's Cloud Computing Team

Open clouds aren't only about open source. But open source is the sine qua non. Open source puts the customer in control and can free them from the technology decisions and business practices of any single vendor. This is important because even the best-intentioned vendors have to ultimately make choices about product roadmaps, pricing approaches, and target markets that may or may not align with the needs of a particular customer.

SaaS, PaaS and IaaS: three cloud models; three very different risks by Joe McKendrick

Many see cloud computing as one huge monolithic wave sweeping through the business world. However, there are many different types of clouds, and the risks — and methodologies needed to address them — varies as much as the cloud models themselves. Vordel’s Mark O’Neill, writing in Computing Technology Review, dissects the differing security issues in Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (Iaas):

IT Consultants Build OpenStack Cloud Business Practices by Joe Panettieri

OpenStack, the open source cloud platform, is beginning to attract an ecosystem of IT consultants, integrators and deployment specialists who can help customers with public cloud and private cloud projects. Key examples include ApriorIT, Cloud9ers, Grid Dynamics, Hastexo Professional Services, Mirantis and Piston Cloud Computing.

Cisco Building More Orchestration and Automation into UCS by Klint Finley

Today on our live show theCube, Cisco SVP Global Strategic Partners Wendy Bahr said that one of the keys to the success of Cisco’s Unified Computing System is the embrace of orchestration and automation through integration with BMC, CA and Cisco’s own UCS Manager. “The early adopters get an added lift of having both the hardware and software expertise,” she said.

Gartner: Cloud Battle is About Vendors, Not Technologies by Brian Taylor

By now, unless you’ve not been paying attention, you know Citrix has decided to align CloudStack with Apache Hadoop, which means Citrix has sided with Amazon Web Services in a very demonstrable way. The news, called a “bombshell” by some, had many reporters, pundits and bloggers — myself included — wondering whether this signaled a new competitive phase between CloudStack, an open source cloud infrastructure, and OpenStack, the other open source cloud infrastructure.

Cloud Computing Skills Shortage Forces CIOs to Grow Their Own by Meridith Levinson

CIOs, technology vendors and consultants agree that a serious shortage of cloud computing skills across the IT industry threatens to impede adoption and deployments. A CIO's best bet for addressing this dearth of talent is to focus on training their existing IT staff.

More Than One-Third of IT Budgets Now Spent on Cloud: Survey by Joe McKendrick

Companies are investing heavily in cloud computing, a new survey of 1,650 IT and business executives shows. On average, they report, more than a third, 34%, of their current IT budgets are now allocated to cloud computing solutions.

Are You One of the 61 Percent? by Lori MacVittie
